A common scene at homes today is that of the youngsters fidgeting with their phones at all times. A second’s time
without the mobile makes them anxious. There exists a compulsion to check every notification that
Reasons for children getting hooked on to gadgets such as mobiles, laptops, play stations and many more
are well-known. In fact, parents themselves, at times, admit to helplessly generating the habit of
keeping the children engaged with a mobile, laptop or some other gadget.
We at Samsidh, understand the limitations that several of our parents face. We are equally concerned
about the well-being of our students. Therefore the following tips have been suggested that could help
in setting boundaries and reducing the amount of time that children spend on gadgets such as mobiles
and laptops. These pointers also equip parents in handling such sensitive issues in the best way possible.
a) Primarily, explain to children the advantages and disadvantages of using a mobile or a laptop
and the necessities of the same. Explain the harmful effects if used for a longer period of time in
simple terms. One could refer to blogs or websites that talk of the physical effects of excessive
b) Clearly establish rules that gadgets can be used for purposes such as entertainment, playing
games, reference for academics. Set rules that mobiles can be used only during free time or in
case of necessity such as educational references. This also involves setting consequences such as
no access to gadgets for one or two days, if violated.
c) When to use? - Set aside a stipulated screen time for the children to use the gadgets. Ideally,
before dinner time or after study hours etc. Usage close to bedtime must be avoided.
d) When not to use? – E.g. Usage of gadgets while studying, eating, during family time and social
gatherings etc., must be frowned upon
e) Where not to use – Usage of gadgets should be strictly forbidden at family gatherings, during
visits by guests, at the dinner table, on the bed while sleeping etc.
f) It must be made clear that there shall be no interruptions when the device is being used by
adults during driving or expecting work calls etc. This helps establish that the gadget belongs to
the parent and is meant to be used primarily by them.
g) Reminders before the time are upkeep announcing the amount of time left for the child to use
the gadget. This makes them aware of the time left for usage and mentally prepares them to
give up on time.
h) Also, asking the child to use the phone or computer in a public space helps them avoid losing
touch of time and utilizing beyond stipulated hours.
i) Look for alternative hobby classes or other board games that equally fascinate the child and
keep them out of boredom
j) A very simple approach to avoiding or breaking the overuse habit of mobile or other gadgets is
by simple not making them accessible. Out of sight, out of mind.
k) Lastly, practice what is preached by staying away from constant usage of mobiles and laptops
when not needed, as children are pick habits through observations.
